Candle Care

Essential tips for maintaining your candles.

FAQ

How to care?

Make sure your wick is trimmed to ¼ inch before each burn. If a black ball of carbon (mushroom) has formed on your wick, trim it off before lighting. If it doesn’t need trimmed just leave it alone. Wait until the wax has completely cooled before trimming and remove any debris from the candle.

You can use a wick trimmer but we prefer nail trimmers as they provide a sharper, cleaner cut.

Be careful not to trim it to short. Trimming it to short can cause your candle to not burn properly and can cause it to self-extinguish. Once that happens, your candle will most likely never recover.

Why is candle care important?

Proper care extends candle life and enhances safety.

Let your candle cool at least 4 hours before relighting. For best results, extinguish with a wick snuffer. A wick snuffer eliminates the smoke caused by blowing it out and also prevents hot wax from splattering. Never extinguish by placing the lid on it. Doing so will trap the smoke inside the vessel causing ugly, black soot to build up on the inside, also leaving a black film on the wax. Eventually your candle will smell like smoke. Yuck. Wait until your candle has completely cooled and then put the lid in it.

Burn your candle away from any drafts, vents or fans. Drafts cause smoking, decreased burn time and can cause a wild flame.

Store your cooled candle in a cool place away from harsh lights. Always store with the lid on.

Did you Know?

There is a thing called “hang up” on a candle. This is when some wax clings to the side of the vessel while the candle is burning. This is different than tunneling. It will usually start so slip down the sides as the candle burns down toward the bottom. It’s completely normal so just let it do its thing!
